This week, Peter Bergman delivered an outstanding performance as Jack Abbott, showcasing a depth of introspection and emotional vulnerability. Jack grappled with understanding the pain his son, Kyle, is experiencing—a pain caused in part by Jack and Diane’s actions. While I’m not usually a fan of Kyle, it’s undeniable that being abandoned by his mother as a child left lasting emotional scars, and Jack is acutely aware of this.
In a heartfelt conversation with his sister, Traci, Jack revisited the pain he endured when their own mother abandoned them. Peter brought raw emotion to Jack’s reflections on the anger, rage, and sadness he felt growing up without a mother, as well as the struggle to forgive and rebuild a relationship with her before her passing.
For a while, I wondered why The Young and the Restless hadn’t drawn more from Jack’s own experiences to help him connect with Kyle. This week, we finally saw that parallel explored. Watching Jack come to the realization that he hadn’t been sensitive enough to Kyle’s trauma was a pivotal moment. His conversation with Kyle—free of judgment and full of understanding—was a beautifully written and performed scene. Jack’s ability to empathize and express regret while acknowledging the shared pain of having an absent parent was deeply moving.
Peter Bergman once again rose to the occasion, bringing layers of emotion, introspection, and authenticity to Jack Abbott. His performance reminded us why he remains a standout on The Young and the Restless.
