After nearly three years of anticipation, Apple TV+’s acclaimed sci-fi thriller Severance is finally returning for its long-awaited second season this January. The series, which captivated audiences with its chilling exploration of memory and corporate control, picks up where we left off—though, with Severance, memory can be a tricky thing.
Season 1 introduced viewers to Mark (Adam Scott), an employee at the mysterious Lumon Industries, where workers undergo a procedure known as “severance,” which separates their work memories from their personal ones. Mark’s life is a double existence, with no knowledge of his personal life while at work, and vice versa. But things take a turn when he is approached by a former coworker, setting him on a path to uncover the sinister truth about Lumon and the nature of the severance process. Patricia Arquette’s portrayal of the stern, enigmatic Harmony Cobel, along with a stellar supporting cast that includes Britt Lower, John Turturro, and Zach Cherry, adds to the intrigue.
Season 1 ended with a shocking finale that revealed some major secrets: Mark learned his deceased wife was actually alive and working at Lumon, Helly discovered she was the daughter of the company’s CEO, and Irving’s deep emotional attachment to a colleague was threatened when he witnessed something that made him question everything. The psychological twists and turns from Season 1 set the stage for an even more intense second season.
However, the road to production wasn’t without its bumps. Reports of behind-the-scenes tensions among co-showrunners, the WGA writers' strike, and the SAG-AFTRA strike further delayed the return of the show. Despite this, production resumed, and fans can finally expect Season 2 to premiere on January 17, 2024. New episodes will drop every Friday through March 21, 2024.
Season 2 promises to bring even more intrigue, with several exciting new cast members. Gwendoline Christie (best known for Game of Thrones) and John Noble (of Fringe fame) are just a few of the new faces joining the already stellar ensemble. Christie’s character works in a different department of Lumon, and while details are scarce, showrunner Ben Stiller hints that she’ll be part of a group “who get their hands dirty” and work toward other, possibly more dangerous goals. Alia Shawkat, Merritt Wever, Bob Balaban, and several others join the cast, with characters whose roles are still largely a mystery. One particularly curious addition is a new deputy manager, played by a child—an unsettling new element in an already bizarre corporate world.
As teased in the official trailer, Season 2 will dive deeper into the aftermath of last season’s rebellion. Mark and his colleagues will continue to grapple with the consequences of their actions, and Harmony Cobel warns Mark, “There’ll be no honeymoon ending for you.” The mystery surrounding Lumon Industries grows even darker as new threats emerge, and Mark and his coworkers must confront the true nature of their lives and the world they inhabit.
Severance has captivated audiences with its unsettling premise, and Season 2 is poised to take the story even further into the unknown. Fans of the first season can look forward to even more twists, conspiracies, and psychological drama as the story unfolds.
Season 1 of Severance is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+, with Season 2 premiering on January 17, 2024.
