A catastrophic gas explosion in the sub-basement of a high-rise building sets off a massive fire, leading to structural instability and widespread chaos. Battalion Chief Dom Pascale, along with Kelly Severide, Christopher Herrmann, and their teams, arrive at the scene and immediately assess the situation. The fire, which originated in a server room belonging to the Employee Pension Fund, was not accidental. Investigators determined that the electrical distribution system was deliberately rigged to overheat, and a large oxygen tank placed inside the room intensified the flames. The explosion compromised the building’s foundation, endangering over 500 occupants and creating an imminent risk of collapse.
As firefighters work to evacuate those trapped, another crisis emerges. A Chicago City Transit (CCT) train, unable to move due to debris on the tracks, is stuck in a tunnel directly beneath the disaster site. Gas leaks in the subway system create the potential for another explosion, and evacuating the passengers is deemed too dangerous until the gas buildup can be controlled. Chief Pascale and his team coordinate with Severide and Herrmann to manage both the fire and the underground crisis, but the situation quickly spirals out of control.
Amid the chaos, Sergeant Trudy Platt is ambushed and shot in the back by an unknown assailant. Adam Ruzek spots two suspects fleeing and immediately gives chase. The suspects split up, and Ruzek pursues one on foot, but the other manages to evade capture by removing his jumpsuit and blending in with the evacuees on the train. Meanwhile, detectives uncover the motive behind the fire, a carefully orchestrated cover-up for a massive $250 million cryptocurrency heist. The pension fund’s assets had been stored in cold storage on an offline data drive, and someone managed to steal it before setting the fire to erase any evidence.
Firefighters continue their search for survivors as the structural integrity of the building worsens. Mouch refuses to leave Trudy behind and eventually finds her unconscious inside an elevator. With the walls crumbling around them, he throws his body over hers to shield her from falling debris, risking his own life in the process. Elsewhere, Lieutenant Kidd remains unaccounted for as a sudden tunnel collapse cuts off the only remaining access to the train, trapping her and potentially other survivors underground. Carver, who had been preparing to re-enter, turns just in time to see the path close behind him.
At Med, Trudy’s condition deteriorates rapidly. As doctors fight to save her, Mouch and other members of the CPD watch helplessly as she flatlines, the weight of uncertainty hanging heavy over the room. Meanwhile, Severide and his team, having rushed back into the tunnel, find themselves with no way forward. The situation remains dire, with Lieutenant Kidd missing, passengers still trapped, and the suspect likely having disappeared among the evacuees.
As first responders scramble to regain control, the crisis is far from over. With lives hanging in the balance, the fight to rescue those still trapped and to uncover the full truth behind the attack continues, leaving the fate of many uncertain as the story unfolds.
