Abbott Elementary Season 4, Episode 9 "Volunteers" Review

Welcome back! It’s a new year and the same hectic schedule. Sit back because this isn’t any normal episode of Abbott. This is a crossover with another Philly-centric show: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia!!!!

We start off the episode with the usual chaos. Ava informs the teachers that the district is sending in volunteers to help out for a week, which couldn’t have come at a better time as the teachers express how much they have fallen behind on their work. Not just their work though, the school itself is falling apart. Ava initially tries to get the golf course to provide some new supplies, but since the last time we spoke to them, the golf course has fully unionized, so now the Abbott teachers no longer have blackmail over them.

The new volunteers come in and it's some familiar faces to some. It’s Mac, Dee, Dennis, Frank, and Charlie, your favorite bar owners from “It’s Always Sunny”. Charlie helps Jacob out with the air vents, Frank is helping Gregory with the garden…….by throwing batteries in it for composting. Dee and Janine quickly bond over them both attending Penn. Mac tries to get Ava to sign a volunteer hours slip so they can leave early. Eventually, the teachers confront the group and they reveal that they are volunteers for community service after they got in trouble for a few small things……like dumping baby oil in the Schuylkill River.

Of course, the teachers want to get rid of them, but Janine’s willing to give them a chance because Dee has been helpful……and because she went to Penn. And she also points out that if they send them back now, the district won’t send volunteers again.

So the teachers decide to put up with it. Things seem to be going okay(?) for now. Frank and Mr. Johnson are arguing over how to rid the garden of raccoons. Jacob sends Charlie to Melissa’s class as he doesn’t think Charlie can read. And everything is still going great with Janine and Dee until Dee starts hitting on Gregory. Obviously, she doesn’t know that he and Janine are dating, but when Janine informs her, she congratulates her……but still says she’s gonna get with him. Janine now wants to get rid of them, but because Mac is doing everything in his power to please Ava so that they can let them leave early, she doesn’t want to dismiss them.

After Melissa and Jacob tell Barbara that Charlie can’t read, she decides to try to help him. Charlie, obviously embarrassed, tries to deny it, saying he can read perfectly, but every action afterward says otherwise. They get him to try and read a book in front of the class, even some of the students try to help him out when he gets stuck on a word. I actually found this very heartwarming. I know reading may seem like an easy skill that everyone, especially adults, would know, but as Barbara said earlier, adult illiteracy is more common than people think and there’s no shame in asking for help.

Mr. Johnson sets up a cage to catch the raccoon, but instead, he catches Frank, who was eating the compost after they put chili powder in it. Ava, after hearing Charlie read the book that talks about protected eggs, works with Mac to get pictures of these eggs by the golf course, therefore having blackmail over the golf course once again.

The episode now ends with Charlie being graduated for reading, Dee getting shot down by Gregory, Frank leaving the garden alone, and Mac getting Ava to sign the volunteer slip. I will say that I was nervous about this episode because I’ve never watched “It’s Always Sunny”. So I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy the episode if I was missing context, but it was still a really good episode. The main takeaways I got from this episode is showing how serious Janine and Gregory’s relationship is. The golf course storyline is slowly continuing with Ava now having more blackmail. I can’t wait for the next episode.
